Overview

Oral Medicine is a speciality of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis and medical management of complex diagnostic and medical disorders affecting the mouth and jaw. It lies at the interface between medicine & dentistry. An Oral Medicine specialist is a “Physician of the mouth”. The speciality manages oral mucosal diseases, salivary gland diseases. Oral cancer screening, tobacco cessation initiatives and management of disease using intralesional injections are some aspects of the professional training programme. Oral Radiology is an integral part of Oral Medicine.

The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at BIDSH, Patna is a specialty in dentistry established in 1984. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a unique branch bridging dentistry and medical sciences. The department provides treatment ranging from routine tooth extractions and impacted tooth surgeries to advanced procedures such as TMJ ankylosis surgery, cleft lip and palate correction, orthognathic surgery, reconstructive facial surgery, maxillofacial trauma management, and cosmetic facial surgery.

The department is equipped with modern surgical units, advanced equipment, dedicated operation theatres, cardiac monitoring systems, pulse oximeters, cautery systems, and specialized surgical instruments. Additional faculty and auxiliary staff ensure efficient patient care and clinical training.

A fully functional operation theatre complex supports major surgical procedures while providing continuous monitoring and postoperative care. The department remains committed to excellence in patient care, education, and research.

UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM:

Undergraduate training focuses on extraction of teeth, management of complications, emergency handling on the dental chair, asepsis protocols, and exposure to a wide range of orofacial pathologies. Students gain hands-on clinical experience through lectures, seminars, demonstrations, and observation of minor and major surgical procedures.

POSTGRADUATE CURRICULUM:

Postgraduate students receive advanced training in dentoalveolar surgery, trauma care, cyst and tumor management, biopsies, fracture treatment, implantology, orthognathic surgery, and maxillofacial reconstruction. They actively participate in research projects, clinical discussions, seminars, and surgical procedures under expert supervision.
